Looking for children's books? Little Free Library book-sharing comes to Oakland Family Services

When preschoolers return to the Children’s Learning Center in Pontiac, they will find a surprise as they enter the building – a Little Free Library!

Thanks to the Metro Detroit Young Professionals Kiwanis Club, preschool families and clients can take a book or share a book from the Little Free Library. The blue, wooden book-sharing box features a glass door so people can see what’s inside.

Volunteers from the Metro Detroit Young Professionals Kiwanis Club gathered at Oakland Family Services on Saturday, Nov. 21 to assemble and install the library box and post. Club members already have installed a Little Free Library at Grant Park in Royal Oak and have another planned in Shelby Township. They are popping up across the country as a way to promote literacy.

“The Little Free Library is a great addition to any community,” said Robert Allen, club president. “It helps encourage childhood reading and literacy. We wanted to have one at Oakland Family Services because the work they do is very important and helps children, which is what Kiwanis clubs focus on.”

Club members held a book drive and donated about 80 books for the library. While the books are geared toward children, young adults may find some options as well.

The Little Free Library is the latest project completed by Metro Detroit Young Professionals Kiwanis Club members for Oakland Family Services. The service organization has been volunteering at Oakland Family Services for more than three years. Members have given their time to manage many projects, from planning and executing field days for students to spreading mulch to beautify our playgrounds.

"We are so excited to have the opportunity to provide our families with increased access to books,” said Nikki Serra, volunteer & engagement coordinator at Oakland Family Services. “Literacy is a core part of education, and this Little Free Library is a great way to help promote literacy in our community. We are so grateful for the support and help of the Metro Detroit Young Professionals Kiwanis Club, who worked so hard to make this library possible!"
