Recovery Month draws attention to mental health, substance use disorder journeys

National Recovery Month celebrates the millions of people who have found, are finding, or have yet to find a path to hope, health and personal growth amid struggles with their mental health and/or misuse of drugs or alcohol. Recovery Month draws attention to the facts that prevention works, treatment is effective and recovery is real.

Oakland Family Services works with thousands of adults, teenagers and children each year at all stages of their recovery journeys. Our Day One counseling program seeks to make recovery accessible to all by providing affordable outpatient programs that help clients find and stay on the path to recovery. We offer specialized support for adults and adolescents with substance use disorders, including PRISM: Project Recovery Intensive Services for Mothers, a one-of-a-kind continuum of care for mothers and pregnant women in recovery.

Below are reflections shared by just a few of the thousands of people Oakland Family Services has helped through mental health or substance use difficulties.

ABOUT RECOVERY MONTH

Led by Faces & Voices of Recovery, Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery from substance use and mental health, just as we celebrate improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease.

Each September, Recovery Month works to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible.
